About this Course

Level 7 focuses on basic English communication skills for high - intermediate English learners. Topics covered include formal presentations, and applications for asking and answering questions. Level 9 focuses on basic English communication skills for advanced English learners.

Level 7

Course Objectives

  • 7.LS.1 Discuss information found in academic sources to determine important details, credibility, and author’s purpose in complete sentences.
  • 7.LS.2 Ask and respond to open-ended questions on academic topics using complete sentences.
  • 7.LS.3 Produce sentences with target phrasal verbs.
  • 7.LS.4 Perform a 4-5 minute planned presentation with electronic visuals and proper citations.
  • 7.LS.5 Deliver an impromptu presentation on class topics.


Integrated Objectives

  • 7.G.1 Produce adjective clauses.
  • 7.G.2 Produce sentences with gerunds and infinitives.
  • 7.G.3 Identify noun clauses.
  • 7.G.4 Produce the passive voice in complete sentences with present perfect, past perfect, and modal verbs.
  • 7.G.5 Identify and produce participial adjectives.
  • 7.RW.1 Identify and cite effective resources for use in academic or professional essays by evaluating bias,
  • purpose, and author’s stance.
  • 7.RW.2 Respond to questions about academic material from sources.
  • 7.RW.3 Produce proper in‐text citation for summaries, paraphrases, and quotations.
  • 7.RW.4 Produce a 5-paragraph timed writing with details and examples.
  • 7.RW.5 Produce a 2-page piece of academic writing using 2+ outside sources and proper citation. 


Level 9

Course Objectives

  • 9.LS.1 Use quotations and reported speech to support oral arguments.
  • 9.LS.2 Deliver a 5 to 7-minute planned presentation with electronic visuals and proper citations.
  • 9.LS.3 Respond in complete sentences to impromptu open-ended questions about class topics.


Integrated Objectives

  • 9.RW.1 Produce plans for timely completion of an academic writing project.
  • 9.RW.2 Produce an in-depth academic or professional project with at least 3 outside sources (business proposal,
  • case study, research paper, etc.) that adheres to academic formatting guidelines.
  • 9.RW.3 Evaluate information as effective or ineffective by evaluating bias, tone, purpose, and quality of
  • research.
  • 9.G.1 Produce grammatically appropriate sentences using all verbs covered in previous levels (present, past,
  • future, modals; active + passive).
  • 9.G.2 Produce sentences with accurate article usage.
  • 9.G.3 Produce sentences and respond to questions using true and untrue conditionals.
  • 9.G.4 Produce grammatically appropriate noun clauses, adjective clauses, and adverb clauses. 


Homework

Students will receive regular homework assignments to reinforce skills learned in class. Students must complete homework on or before the date it is due. Homework is included in the final course grade.


Make-up Work

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with each instructor to make up work he/she might have missed. It may be necessary for the student to receive tutoring for additional help from an instructor with make-up work. Level Advancement

To pass a level, students must achieve a 2.0 GPA or greater and meet the requirements of the attendance policy. Failure to do so will result in the student repeating the level.
